How to Avoid the Delete Button
Executive search consultants are receiving an increasing daily flood of e-mails from professionals seeking jobs. Clearly, the market is worsening and talent on the street is aggressively pursuing every channel available to uncover fewer and fewer jobs. I am, however, astounded by the manner in which some individuals communicate with me. For example, I’ll receive many e-mails with “job seeker” in the subject line, and then nothing in the body of the e-mail, just a resume attached. I suppose the purpose is to highlight how succinct this person is in their professional communications. For that one, I hit Delete. Another classic is something confusing in the subject line, like “various”, and then a one-line message such as “please consider me” signed “Jack”. I do consider Jack for a minute, and then hit Delete. If someone cannot construct a professional communication, they certainly will not get a recruiter’s attention. If you are going to contact a search firm, do so with a professional transmittal note incorporated into the e-mail with a highlighted point that will make you stand out, and then attach a well-constructed cover letter and your resume. For that, I hit Save.
