The Rio Olympics did not disappoint us. It was another two weeks of amazement watching young athletes from almost every nation compete  across almost every summer sport. As I watch these athletes, I cannot help but reflect on their incredible commitment, sacrifice and drive. Alas, Rio was also marred by amateur antics by swimming gold medalist Ryan Lochte who, along with three other athletes, fabricated an alleged robbery, embarrassing Brazil, his teammates and the United States.

Lochte is now paying the price for his indiscretion.  His major sponsors, including Ralph Lauren and Speedo, cut their ties to the swimmer, joining him with a cadre of sports figures, businessmen, politicians and other notables who broke the cardinal rule: integrity. Nothing is more important than good judgment and integrity, be it in sports, business or politics.

I applaud Lochte’s sponsors for their swift action to cut their ties with the swimmer. The good news is that they have plenty of other incredibly talented young athletes to take his place.
