It’s funny how fortunes have changed since the surprise election of Donald Trump.  One of the big winners were the two prison REITs, who were recently pummeled by the Obama Administration’s public announcement that it planned to phase out private prisons. The announcement followed a Justice Department monitoring report indicating some safety and security problems at their prisons.

I must admit, when I first heard the news about concerns over the private systems, I reflected that most government controlled systems are widely viewed as a disaster.  With Trump’s win, the largest company, CoreCivic has rallied 43%, not only because Trump is unlikely to follow Obama’s lead, but his aggressive immigration policy may even fill the prison cells to overflowing.

Put on your seatbelts because the new administration is likely to trumpet in all sorts of reversals, new trends, opportunists and setbacks for those who expected a different outcome.
