Conventional wisdom says that it is near impossible for later stage career workers who are north of 55, are often out of luck in a competitive hiring environment. The facts indicate otherwise.

The 55 and older crowd is the only age group with a rising labor-force participation rate. Interestingly, more than 60% of workers who are 65 or older now hold full-time positions up from 44% in 1995. Another factlet that caught my attention was a Kauffman Foundation study that indicated that 26% of entrepreneurs who launched businesses in 2015 were between 55 and 64 years old, up from 14.3% in 1996.

On the executive search front I can confirm that increasingly, executive charged with hiring senior roles often are open to hiring later stage career executives. For example, recently we completed a CEO search for a public company and the successful candidate was 65 when he reported for work. The reality is that someone who has seen it all through multiple economic cycles has a perspective and wisdom that otherwise would not come along with a more junior hire.

In my view we will see these statistics continue to grow in favor of those who were once deemed to be “over the hill.”
