It is probably valid to say that most CEOs and other senior executives are not sufficiently in touch with their business, focusing on shareholders and investor relations, high-level strategy, financial metrics, how their stock options are doing, and so on and so forth. However, there is a lot to learn about the business at the grass roots and in the field.

I recently read about a young 33-year-old CEO of a Silicon Valley software company who launched a new project. He shadowed one person on each of the 37 teams that make up the company—from product design to software engineering to social media—spending one to 1½ hours with them each week. He even took the reception desk station and got to know 75 employees who he did not know!

This is a good idea. Every leader should roll-up his or her sleeves and get in among the troops, learn where the business really happens, and connect the dots.
