HOUSTON—Local developer Midway Companies said this week that it plans to build a 225-room, 25-story luxury hotel before the end of 2016, in anticipation of the 2017 Super Bowl. Hotel Alessandra will be on the site of the former Yao Restaurant & Bar where demolition work beginning this summer.

Houston-based Valencia Group is partnering on the project and will operate the hotel for Midway.

Midway hopes to compete with other five-star accommodations as the Four Seasons, St. Regis and Hotel Granduca, according to a report in the Houston Chronicle.

Midway and Valencia have previously partnered on Hotel Sorella CityCentre, which is one of  two Houston hotels to make Condé Nast Traveler’s 2014 Gold List.

San Francisco-based Gensler’s Houston and Los Angeles offices designed the architecture for the project.

The Alessandra will be among at least four other planned or recently opened hotel projects within walking distance of the George Brown Convention Center. All are said to be receiving financial incentives from Houston First Corporation, an economic development agency, supported in part by public funds.

Plans for the Alessandra include 7,000 square feet of retail.
