LOS ANGELES—The retail experience is changing to be more culturally and entertainment driven, and retail owners are redeveloping existing centers and malls to create that experience. To accomplish a distinct style, the retail designers tasked with redesigning these projects are looking not only at local demographic patterns but also at psychographic patterns in the region and local community, according to Greg Lyon, owner, design director and principal at Nadel Architects, which is responsible for the look of the award-winning Azalea Regional Shopping Center in South Gate. We sat down with Lyon for an exclusive interview to find out what design trends are dominating the retail market and what designers are using for inspiration.
