The tribe hired real estate developer David Nunes, manager of Acquisitions Strategies LLC, to find a suitable site on which it could develop a facility. The Martha's Vineyard-based tribe has been trying for years to build a casino and at one point had zeroed in on a location in the New Bedford/Fall River area but Nunes tells GlobeSt.com that this new effort, while not a widening of the search, will be a "more thorough" search for the appropriate parcel.

Nunes notes that the tribe is looking for a site that has at least 150 acres with 70% of the property uplands, which means that, as opposed to wetlands, there is no problem building upon the property. "This is a new effort to find a site in Southeastern Massachusetts," points out Nunes, who adds that he is looking at towns that are "ancestral" lands.

Nunes acknowledges that it is still unclear if casino gambling will be legalized in the state but he says that the site selection process is running parallel to the legislative process. "We believe [this issue] has reached maturity inside the legislature," says Nunes. "Beacon Hill has the say in this matter."
