Construction has begun on a 15,000-sf addition to the former 31,000-sf building. The project, designed by HDS Architecture, Inc., a Boston-based diversified architectural firm, is scheduled to be completed by this spring. The In Home Furnishings store, which previously occupied the existing building, is relocating to a newly renovated retail building at 323 Speen St.

Hans D. Strauch, AIA, a principal of HDS Architecture notes that redesigning this building was challenging because of its high visibility location and the fact that it had to be tied into the existing retail center while still providing an independent identity for the new tenants. He also emphasizes that the "creative design aspect" was most important in this case because the majority of the people coming to or passing by the Center are traveling in fast moving cars.

The building also had to conform with new zoning bylaws that require lower roof lines as well as what Roberta G. Sydney, president of Sydney Companies, calls "the softer economic environment" which necessitated a "need to build for a reasonable cost."
