Children's Hospital will move to the Fitzsimons hospital and biotech center in Aurora. The charrette explored redevelopment possibilities, includingre-integrating the blocks into the residential neighborhood, allowingexpansion of the remaining health-care facilities, environmentalcontamination issues, historic preservation, and desirable urban design.
The site is adjacent to two other health-care facilities and is surrounded by a dense residential neighborhood of mid-rise apartment buildings,small-scale retail businesses, extensive office and healthcare-related uses, and historic single-family homes.
Three scenarios were presented by University of Colorado at Denver professor John Prosser's Urban Design graduate students. The objective of the charrette was not to select a preferred option, but to generate a palette of "good ideas" for the redevelopment of the Children's Hospital site that can be used for future planning.
In 1994, the American Planning Association launched a program to provide professional assistance to local governments. The Community Planning Team Program was based on several existing models from the American Institute of Architects and the Urban Land Institute, which brought together volunteer planners to work with communities.
