The Florida development company, headed by Mel Sembler, U.S. Ambassador to Italy, has received its second approval from the Atlanta city council zoning committee. Atlanta's zoning review board previously voted for the Moreland Avenue project. And now the city's full council has to vote on the venture April 21.
The developer has fought residents and Little Five Point neighbors all the way on the estimated $50 million venture. City hall sources confirm the residents have attached a list of 80 conditions to the development order request.
Before approving the project, residents want the council to ensure that Sembler will provide more green space; more housing; and operate a weekend shuttle connecting the development with MARTA, Little Five Points and East Atlanta.
Sembler is serving in his second ambassadorial post. In 1989, he was U.S. Ambassador to Australia.
