ST. JOHN’S, CANADA-RONA is spending $20 million to build a 68,000-square-foot store here on Torbay Road, just north of Stavanger Drive. This will be the home construction retailer’s 10th store in the Newfoundland and Labrador province.
The company has been busy on Canada’s eastern coast recently, with the recent acquisition of Piercey’s stores in Nova Scotia, another store here on O’Leary Avenue that recently underwent a $2.8 million renovation, and a location in Bay Roberts, Canada. Two stores in the local area have been closed due to poor performance. In the province, the company also has stores in Fortune, Gander, Goulds, Kelligrews and Wabush, with a total 686 stores across the country.
This new store will be built to LEED standards, according to the company. The firm will use low-emissions materials, a white energy-efficient roofing system, movement detection for lighting, low-flow sanitation equipment, wood from certified forests and locally-manufactured materials. “By lowering the environmental footprint of our new stores, we make sure we minimize the environmental impact RONA has on the community,” said Pierre Dandoy, EVP of store operations, in a statement.
