FALLS CHURCH, VA-Computer Sciences Corp. reports it cut its worldwide workforce by 8,000 workers during fiscal 2013 and intends to slash its real estate holdings by 1 million square feet by the end of next year.

The company, which spent $264 million in restructuring costs during fiscal 2013 that ended March 30, had only engaged in a minimal reduction of its office space during that time, CEO Mike Lawrie told investors on Wednesday.

"Fewer employees reduces the need for space, and we are reducing space around the world," a spokesman said.

The company currently has 16 million square feet in owned and leased space, with plans to trim 1 million square feet by the end of 2014, including data center locations, according to the Washington Business Journal. The company is headquartered in Falls Church in three headquarters buildings at 3170 Fairview Park Drive.

CSC plans to mainly reduce space in existing facilities rather than leave facilities entirely, a company spokesman states. See story in the Washington Business Journal.
