SCOTTSDALE, AZ-Upscale movie theater chain UltraStar Cinemas filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on its location at the Scottsdale Pavilions shopping center here.

The bankruptcy filing late last month came about a month after the movie theater's landlord DeRito Partners Inc. of Phoenix filed a lawsuit against Scottsdale Cinema Group Inc. in Maricopa County Superior Court seeking to recoup back rent and a past-due promissory note that total more than $1 million, according to the Phoenix Business Journal.

“It's not performing up to snuff,” UltraStar Vice President of Operations Damon Rubio says of its Scottsdale location. The theater, which remains open, has been located at a 45,000-square-foot space at the Pavilions since early 2010. See story in the Phoenix Business Journal.
