PHILADELPHIA-The City Council is debating changes in the industrial zoning in the Southwest section of the city to stem the tide of new automobile repair shops and salvage yards in the area.

2nd-District Councilman Kenyatta Johnson wants to stem the spread of these types of businesses and his views are gaining support from many of his Council colleagues. However, the measures necessary to accomplish the goal have been elusive, according to PlanPhilly.com.

Tracey Gordon, a member of the Southwest Concerned Citizens group, testified at a Council committee hearing on Tuesday that chop shops and salvage yards have been opening  near residential areas of Southwest Philadelphia and causing problems, such as discarded tires and car parts, noise, and fumes.

After hearing some objections to his two bills, Councilman Johnson decided on Tuesday to hold the bills and work further on the measures to garner additional support. See story at PlanPhilly.com.
