JERSEY CITY, NJ—The City Council granted tax abatements on Wednesday evening for two major mixed-use projects at Journal Square and Downtown.

The tax abatements will allow a 50-story apartment tower at 65 Bay St. to move forward. The City Council approved a five-year tax abatement for the Bay Street project that will feature 447 units as well as retail space. The tower will share the adjacent Trump Tower parking deck, but will add 144 spaces to the facility, according to the Jersey Journal.

The council also approved a 20-year abatement for construction of a $22-million mixed-use project at 25 Senate Place. That development will have 266-apartment units and some retail space..

The session was attended by many members of the region's building trades who pressed the council to make sure both developments hire union and local workers. A spokesman for the Bay Street tower project said that the project would be completed by union workers.

“By God we are going to make sure that is enforced and we are going to make sure you get Jersey City people to work here,” said Council President Rolando Lavarro. See story in the Jersey Journal.
