LONDON—International law firm Ropes & Gray LLP says that one of the UK's leading real estate lawyers, Carol Hopper, is joining the firm as a partner in the London office.
Her arrival marks the second high-powered partner to join the firm's global real estate investments and transactions practice this month, after Ed Sheremeta joined the firm on Jan. 5 in Hong Kong to lead a pan-Asia real estate initiative. In addition, Matt Posthuma, a private investment funds partner who focuses on real estate investments, joined the firm's Chicago office on Jan. 9.
“We are delighted to welcome Carol Hopper to the firm,” said London real estate partner Iain Morpeth. “She brings with her a wealth of experience in the real estate, infrastructure and projects work, an area of particular importance to our clients.”
Their arrivals enhance the firm's robust global real estate practice at a time of increased activity in real estate investments in Europe, Asia and the United States. Ropes & Gray boasts more than 75 highly skilled attorneys around the world working on real estate matters, including 45 professionals specifically focused on real estate issues and others concentrating on key components of real estate investments and transactions, including finance, restructuring, private equity, tax and M&A.
The firm says Hopper strengthens its presence in London. Previously a partner in Allen & Overy, Hopper has a wide range of experience in the real estate sector. She has vast experience in mid-to-large-cap transactional deals that arise in all aspects of commercial real estate work, and she has advised funds, investors, banks, financial institutions and corporate entities on a wide variety of real estate-based transactions, both domestic and international. Her clients have included Avestus Capital Partners, Balfour Beatty, David S. Smith, Depfa, Deka, Goldman Sachs, Lloyds Bank, Tyco International, Welcome Break and Wells Fargo.
“Carol Hopper is a true asset to our London real estate practice and to the global practice overall, as we continue to serve clients at the highest level,” said David Djaha, global head of the firm's real estate investments & transactions practice.
“Together, Carol in London and Ed Sheremeta in Hong Kong bolster our market-leading real estate practice in regions of the world that are of critical importance to our clients. Investors, including private equity and hedge funds, are increasingly focused on real estate assets, and the strengthening of our team in the UK, Asia and the United States ensures that our attorneys can serve clients not only where they are, but where they aspire to be.”
Hopper holds a BA in jurisprudence from Pembroke College, Oxford University. She is admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales.
