Sands is very active in the community. At the state level, he has served as an assistant facilitator for non-profit housing projects and is a member of the Smart Growth Coalition.
Locally, he has been involved in the City of Royal Oak's Master Plan and the city of Birmingham's Floor Area Ratio new construction ordinance.
