Talks with the company have been going on for about six months, according to Steve Nye, executive director of the Cleveland County Economic Development Commission. The local government estimates the city and county would recover the value of the incentives within five years through increased tax revenues from the project. The distribution company has agreed to be annexed into Shelby.

The company is also considering other sites, including some in the Charlotte region, say people close to the project. CommScope Inc. is another firm that has its eye on Cleveland County. The Hickory, NC-based cable manufacturer plans to build a $30-million, 350,000-sf plant near Shelby. The company is working on a deal to buy 35 acres west of Kings Mountain, NC. CommScope also considered land in Charlotte and Lincoln County.
