"Growing demand has indicated that it was the right time to step up to the plate to provide the kind of volume our commercial and government clients need," says Bair, whose company is the largest manufacturer of modern yurts in the world. "A number of our clients are looking into buying 25 and 50 units at a time."
Pacific Yurts are tent-like living structures made of wood and fabric. Bair's customers range from state parks to ski resorts, from the military to vacation property owners. Oregon State Parks alone have more than 180 of Bair's yurts in their parks, from which they are said to be making a tidy profit by renting them to park visitors for overnight stays.
The new building enables the company to separate its storage and packaging operations from its manufacturing, Bair said. The company sold 400 yurts in 2000, up from 330 in 1999, and expects similar growth in 2001. The structures sell from $ 3,000 up to $ 11,000 for the largest models with high-end upgrades, Bair said.
