Lowes is the world's second largest home improvement chain, behind Home Depot, which is currently nearly double the size of Lowes. The two companies combined account for nearly 20% of the home improvement market. Lowes, which started out in rural markets is now reportedly expanding into urban markets, where Home Depot got its start. There are currently 26 Home Depots in Massachusetts.
Lowe's plans to open a store here this month in Danvers and has other stores planned for Brockton, North Attleboror, and Worcester. The company opened its first store in this state a year ago in Springfield. Lowes has more than 650 stores across the country.
