Friedman reached an agreement to develop the jail with Massachusetts General Hospital, which owns the jail, over a year ago. MGH spokesperson Michelle Marcella confirms for GlobeSt.com that Friedman is "planning on building a hotel" at the jail site, which has been closed down for years. But reportedly Friedman is currently working on acquiring approval from the Massachusetts Historical Commission, a group that oversees local landmarks.
Friedman also needs financing for the project, which is reported to be about $70 million. While larger hotels in this area have recently had difficulty nailing down financing--such as the 1,120-room convention center hotel in South Boston--smaller projects, like this one, have managed to get financial backing. Friedman reportedly plans to start work on the project by the end of the year.
