The mall was shut down from about 8 a.m. until it opened again at 6 p.m. -- after police concluded the man, Anthony S. Zappa, had eluded them for the second time in as many days. Meanwhile, the mall's 500-plus stores and restaurants lost more than $1 million -- probably more, given that it averages $2.3 million insales per day, according to mall officials. On average, about 100,000 shoppers visit the mall each day.

The mall has closed only a few other times, the most significant being an extended a power outage over a weekend in June 1994.
