According to figures just released by port commerce director Dick Larrabee, Authority officials were on target in their optimism for launching the expansion program. With the numbers all counted, the port registered a hefty gain of nearly 10% last year in metric tonnage passing through its facilities. The tonnage total topped the 63.8 million mark.

It's also one of the world's premier container ports, and for the first time ever it topped the three million mark for containers handled, according to Larrabee. For the first time in more than two decades, more than 5,000 vessels came calling last year.

Finally, cargo value topped $81.8 million last year, an increase of more then 13% from the year before. According to current projections by Port Authority officials, cargo traffic will increase by more than 4% a year for the next 20 years or so.
