The average rent on a three-bedroom apartment in Westchester County increased 39% from 1999 to 2000 according to fourth-quarter and full-year reports released by WRO. Two-bedroom rental rates increased 30%, and one-bedroom rates 6%. Studio unit rates decreased 4%, the agency reports.
The countywide average monthly rent on a three-bedroom unit was $1,898 in the fourth quarter of 2000 and $1,932 for the entire year. WRO reported that a yearly income in excess of $75,000 would be needed to afford the rents charged for the three-bedroom units.
Average monthly rentals for smaller units were $1,442 for two-bedroom units, $1,036 for one-bedroom, and $808 for studios. The studio and one-bedroom rents were affordable to households with incomes between $32,000 and $41,000, the report states.
Among two-bedroom units, the highest overall rent levels were found in Scarsdale, Chappaqua, Bedford, Briarcliff and Valhalla. The lowest average rental costs were found in Yonkers, Mohegan Lake, Mount Vernon, Thornwood and Mahopac.
