A 57,800-sf Safeway will anchor the project and be the first structure built. Other tenants have yet to sign on for space in the development, which will include office buildings, drive-through restaurants and various smaller retailers.
Site grading and tree removal is slated to begin later this year. The entire project may take upward of three years to complete. Century Park will have to go through the design review process with the city for each building it wants to build.
Ken Diener of Portland's KJD Architecture PC is the project's designer. George Crandall of the Portland-based Crandall Arambula helped Diener redesign the project under the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development's Quick Response program, which was set up to ensure that proposed commercial developments blend in with the neighborhood.
The program, which brings in professional and non-professional community members to help produce design alternatives, was initiated after local residents expressed concerns about pedestrian access, traffic circulation and preservation of the area's character. In the final design, the buildings are closer together in an attempt to address pedestrian needs like safer crossing areas, covered plazas, an arboretum and walking paths.
