Stephen Shilling, who heads the Montgomeryville, PA-based Quaker Group, is betting on that long-awaited upturn. Shilling, better known as a builder of upscale homes in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, is stepping outside of the box--he's joining the trend of new minor league baseball parks springing up all over. In New Jersey alone, minor league parks and teams have sprung up in Sussex, Montclair, Bridgewater, Lakewood, Atlantic City, Trenton--and now Camden.
In about a month, Campbell's Field, a 6,425-seat venue rising on the former Campbell's Soup site, will be home to the Camden Riversharks of the independent Atlantic League. Interestingly, Quaker will give the ballpark to Rutgers-Camden for its use as athletic fields and will lease it back for 40 years, paying the city of Camden 50 cents for each fan in lieu of taxes.
Shilling hopes his ballpark and the other waterfront attractions will generate enough interest so he can get back to his forte. Over the long term, he's planning to build riverfront housing and other commercial uses in the neighborhood.
