Cox will lease office facilities for a studio in East Village Square, the mixed-use commercial development just beyond the outfield fence of the proposed ballpark.

The Padres and Cox also agreed on a 10-year extension of a contract under which the cable company shows about 145 games a year.

Bill Geppert, VP and general manager of Cox Communications, said at a news conference Tuesday that the deal "really makes a statement about our belief in the long-term importance and viability" of the redevelopment project.

Cox is the second major company to commit to leasing space in the area. The Padres announced a couple of weeks ago that Arrowhead General Insurance Agency had signed a 10-year, $30-million lease for 75,000 sf of office space in East Village Square.
