A factor in the growth of Charlotte is the state's zoning laws that allow wide leeway for cities to annex along their borders.

Charlotte has more people living there than major cities such as Atlanta and Miami, though they have more populated metro areas.

The seven-county Charlotte metro area includes Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Gaston, Lincoln, Rowan, Union and York County in South Carolina. That area grew 29% during the 1990s to almost 1.5 million people.

The fastest-growing county in the Charlotte region was Union. Three of the 100 fastest-growing counties in the country were in North Carolina--Johnston and Wake in the Raleigh area and Hoke west of Fayetteville.
