Shoppers spent more than $1 billion last year at the top 29 General Growth centers, the Chicago-based REIT says in a prepared statement. Tourism accounts for almost one third of the sales.
As result, the company has started a corporate tourism strategy terming it America's Favorite Shopping Destinations. The umbrella brand will market the company's primary tourism centers as attractions through local tourism marketing programs.
The theme will be carried to various international tourism shows, including the international Pow Wow show, the largest international trade show in the U. S. The theme will also be reinforced at local and state tourism and trade events.
General Growth is one of the largest shopping center developers and managers with interests in 146 regional malls in 39 states. The portfolio of more than 127 million sf includes over 15,000 retailers nationwide.
