The city already is replacing three police stations for a cost of $36 million. They are scheduled to be replaced by 2003.
A report to the city says most of the police buildings are decades old and it makes more sense to replace them than repair them. Denver, however, needs to spend $26.2 million to renovate its 25-year-old police administration building. Another $12.8 million needs to be spent to consolidate special units such as the bomb squad and SWAT team, which are housed in a 69-yearold building.
The cost of the police buildings is on top of a $300 million plan to replace the Denver County Jail. The city has not determined yet how to pay for the new police stations.
