The hotel is located in the Historic Hill district here and until five years ago, was controlled by the Restoration Foundation, which used its basement as a mill house for restoring other pieces of architectural antiquity. Vanderbilt Hall was originally bestowed to the Newport community as a YMCA in 1909 by the Vanderbilt family, from which it is named.

A consortium that that renovated the hotel and added a new wing purchased Vanderbilt Hall. The building is now a 52-room, full-service hotel.
