"It's definitely one of the more exciting projects," Susan Schumacher, Turner's Philadelphia region marketing manager, tells GlobeSt.com. "The whole nature of the museum makes it unique unto itself."
Turner Corp.'s wholly owned construction subsidiary has just started pushing dirt at the site, Schumacher says. Delivery is set for summer 2003.
Harry Cobb of New York City-based Pei Cobb & Freed designed the building. It will be built in Independence National Historical Park Mall and is part of the revitalization of that landmark site. Ralph Appelbaum of Ralph Appelbaum Associates of New York is designing the museum exhibits. His recognized works include the design of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC; New York City's Rose Planetarium; and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.
The National Constitution Center had been established by Congress through the Constitution Heritage Act of 1988. The museum is expected to draw one million visitors per year.
In the past 10 years, Turner's Philadelphia office has finished more than $3.5 billion of construction in the region. Its high-profile under-construction projects are the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology expansion; Philadelphia International Terminal; Temple University's Cooney Hall; Merck & Co.'s United State Human Health Office Complex; and the Boys and Girls Club of Camden County in New Jersey.
