The function of the center is to train workers in high-skill, high-wage, high-demand occupations, specifically tailored to meet the needs of local businesses. The OCC center's training will specifically target the workers in the information technology occupation area.

There will be 18 M-TEC's throughout the state. Currently, seven of the 18 centers are open, at schools such as Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, Kellogg Community College in Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Valley Community College in Kalamazoo.

Michigan has invested $60 million to establish the centers across the state.
