After two years of planning and community negotiations, The Red Door Alehouse was moved one block west of its present site in the city's popular district, making way for a new, mixed-use development that will include 130 apartment units in rent-starved residential area. The complex also will contain a new restaurant, street-level retail and parking.
Suzie Burke, the controversial owner and developer who owns both the present and former site of the tavern, said the bar's operators will again remodel the structure which had already lost too many of its original features to previous makeovers to retain landmark status.
Lindsay Moving and Rigging moved the 100-year old building yesterday (Sunday) by jacking up the structure and inserting a huge beam-and-wheel assembly. The company has made several prominent moves, including the barging of rock star Kenny G's brick mansion from nearby Bellevue to Bainbridge Island in Puget Sound.
