The remodel, a Centex contact tells GlobeSt.com, had required intense scheduling on the contractor's part since the work has been completed while the ICU remained operational. The Hanauport arm, manufactured by Heraegus, houses all electronic monitoring systems, cables and gas lines with mobility that is particularly beneficial when medical teams are simultaneously caring for a single patient. The arm is commonly used in Europe.

The ICU project is just part of a larger expansion strategy to add two more ICU floors for a total of 96 beds. It also is part of a four-phase construction project at the Children's Medical Center, which in the past decade has added two primary buildings as part of the initiative. The past decade also has brought the addition of a 21,8000-sf parking garage, 9,000-sf surgical suites and support area, 20,000-sf addition to the outpatient clinic, 35,000-sf expansion of the central plant and 186,000-sf bed tower. Centex has been providing pre-construction and construction management services through the project.

The ICU expansion consists of 11 rooms, each outfitted with a Hanauport arm. It mobility enables patients to be repositioned in front of large windows that are part of the re-design and a medical belief that natural lighting aids the healing process. Each room also features a computerized charting station as well as recliners for visitors.
