The grant was given to the alliance from the state's Growth Capital Fund on Tuesday.

The alliance, headed by a board that includes representatives from the University of Michigan, Michigan Technological University, Wayne State University, the Michigan Economic Development Corp., Ardesta and Integrated Sensing Systems, was formed to further grow the state's microsystems industry presence.

The rest of the award will be a challenge grant to encourage additional private and public funding.

A study now being conducted by expert Roger Grace will develop an industry growth strategy for the alliance to follow. The study recommendations will be presented by December.

The growth fund was created to encourage public and private investments in the state's technology business sector.
