The plant will use reverse osmosis technology to produce 25 million gallons per day of drinking water by December 2002, according to Industrial Information Resources Inc., a Houston-based industry researcher.
A five million-gallon water tank has already been built. A second seven million-gallon tank is being constructed as a supply tank at the Tampa Water Co. site. A 14-mile, 42-inch diameter pipeline will connect the two tanks.
Covanta Water Systems Inc., a division of publicly traded Covanta Energy Corp. of Fairfield, NJ, is the project's general contractor. Covanta will operate the plant when it is completed.
Poseidon's 1999 contract with Tampa Water is the first long-term public-private partnership completed in the United States for such a project, according to Industrial Information Resources.
