The site bordered on the north by commuter rail and freight line tracks has been vacant for 10 years, city officials say. Lakin General is getting financing from $6.6 million in industrial revenue bonds and will see their property tax assessments lowered through the Cook County Class 6(b) incentive program to build its roller division. Because the former Archer Daniels Midland site is in an enterprise zone, Lakin also is eligible to receive additional city and state tax credits.
While other industrial uses can be found east and west of the site, a neighborhood of single-family homes is located to the south. Company officials say their machinery that produces parts used in agricultural equipment will not cause noise problems for their new neighbors.
Lakin General is relocating from 2865 N. Paulina Ave. in the city's Lakeview neighborhood, which considers to see continued upscale residential redevelopment of buildings, including former industrial structures.
The city, which acquired the 5.7-acre site through foreclosure, says the deal keeps 80 jobs in Chicago, with another 40 expected in three years.
