Four of the new stores are Sportmarts: one in the Crystal Lake Mall inCrystal Lake, IL; the Southwest Plaza III Shopping Center in Springfield,IL; Burbank Empire Center in Burbank, CA; and Arbor Lake in MapleGrove, MN. It also opened an Oshman's in Frisco, TX.
''These store openings represent a key step in our overall expansion strategy,'' says Doug Morton, chairman, president and CEO of Gart Sports. ''Texas, Illinois, Minnesota and California all have been strong markets for our stores and we are excited about our expanding presence in each state.''
With these five stores, Gart Sports has 182 stores in 25 states.
Gart Sports has no relationship to Gart Properties of Denver, which sold its namesake company. Gart Properties aggressively seeks under-valued commercial real estate investments in Colorado, and also operates some sporting goods and ski stores.
