The two contracting teams are Washington Group International Inc. and Fluor Federal Services Inc.
The two teams were selected to share approximately $107 million in construction tasks over the next five years for CH2M Hill Hanford Group, which holds the prime contract to manage 54 million gallons of nuclear waste in 177 tanks on the U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford site in western Washington.
It is the second major contract won by Washington Group in the past year to help deal with the waste that is a by-product of more than a half century of nuclear processing activities at the Hanford site. In December 2000, Washington Group, teamed with Bechtel National, Inc., won a contract to design, build and commission a plant to treat liquid waste at Hanford and immobilize it for ultimate disposal.
"This is a strong endorsement of the extensive and unique capabilities our company has in efficiently and safely dealing with some of the most complex projects in the world," Stephen G. Hanks, President and Chief Executive Officer of Washington Group said in announcing the news.
Specific tasks that are part of the two contracts include construction and upgrades of tank ventilation systems, waste transfer and retrieval systems, and interim waste storage facilities to support tank farm closure activities.
