Tourism, San Antonio's second-biggest industry, generates $4 billion a year in revenue and employs 79,000. It has suffered, however, after travelers cut back following the Sept. 11 attacks. The city's hotels will lose up to $47 million in gross revenues through Dec. 31, according to estimates. The resulting impact could take up to $100 million from the San Antonio economy.
The San Antonio city council recently kicked in an extra $2 million for the convention center's marketing budget, boosting it to $7.6 million for the year.
The San Antonio Area Tourism Council is sponsoring the current promotion, which runs from Dec. 1 to 27. Participating hotels include the Menger Hotel, Marriott Rivercenter and Riverwalk, La Mansion del Rio, Hilton Palacio del Rio, the Embassy Suites Airport and the San Antonio Hilton Airport.
