"There is still quite a bit of work here and in the other two stations," Wayne Thies, Southborough's town planner tells GlobeSt.com. Thies says the stations were supposed to open by the end of the calendar year but a number of complications--including problems with Amtrak and delays in getting the mitigation roads built--have pushed the opening dates off, possibly until summer. "This is typical of the state, to be running late," notes Thies.
Thies points out that the state and the towns have been working on the commuter rail station project for over 10 years now. "I guess another couple of months won't make much of a difference," he says. The cold weather has also made building the station more challenging.
Another part of the problem is that the three towns have to open within 60 days of each other, so that one of the stations won't have to handle commuters from all three towns. "We thought they could get ours done, but they couldn't get them all done," he says. Thies adds that locals are anxiously looking forward to the opening of the station. Many residents moved here in anticipation of a station opening, he says. "Let's just get on with it," he adds.
