The AES source says BOMA evaluated numerous electricity providers in a competitive bid process. AES NewEnergy gets the endorsement, says the source, due to its performance evaluations, reputation, contractual issues and pricing.

One high-rolling building owner's name is being put out publicly: TrizecHahn, a 49 million-sf REIT. But, it signed on with AES NewEnergy before the BOMA endorsement. AES NewEnergy will provide power to nearly 7.8 million sf of Houston and Dallas office space. The deal equates to about 16% of TrizecHahn's total portfolio. The source says TrizecHahn's eight Houston properties, totaling roughly six million sf, used AES NewEnergy for participation in the state's pilot program that lead up to the Jan. 1 deregulation rollout. All classes of customers are now free to choose their energy providers.

The freshly inked AES NewEnergy-TrizecHahn contract includes all of the Houston properties from the pilot program plus the 1.7 million-sf Renaissance Tower in Dallas. TrizecHahn isn't saying how much money it will save, but sources confirm that commercial property owners of comparable size are saving 20% to 30% over 2001 rates."TrizecHahn was one of the first companies to take advantage of competition in Texas during the pilot program," says Paul Layne, TrizecHahn's senior vice president in Houston. "The savings were substantial and we look forward to sharing in the success of this market."

TrizecHahn also uses AES NewEnergy for its provider in Illinois and New York. "We are enjoying reliable, high-quality service with lower prices," Layne says. "We're happy and pleased one company can meet our needs in a variety of different markets."

AES NewEnergy claims to be America's leading retail electricity provider. In addition to Texas, Illinois and New York, it has commercial and industrial customers in California, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Maine.
