It will provide an educational and cultural resource that focuses on the history, literature, art, music, religion and politics of African-Americans in Denver and throughout the Rocky Mountain West.
''The African-American Research Library will be unique to Denver and the Rocky Mountain region,'' says Denver Library Commission Vice President Landri C. Taylor. ''This library collection will celebrate contributions of the tremendous people that helped to build contemporary Western American life and culture.''
Jim Bershof of OZ Architecture and Harold Massop of Harold Massop Architects are designers of the building. The joint venture of Turner Construction and J. A. Walker Construction is the general contractor.
The facility will include a full-service branch library with a 100-seat multipurpose room; archives and research library; exhibition space; and parking for 65 cars. The new library will replace the Five Points Branch Library at 2855 Tremont Pl.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for us to improve library services to the residents of the Five Points community and offer a research library that focuses on the contributions of African-Americans that helped shape ourregion," says city librarian Rick J. Ashton. "The work underway will become another Rocky Mountain jewel."
