Besides Mayor Richard M. Daley, the project has the support of 27th Ward Alderman Walter Burnett. "The new Hellenic Museum will be the focal point of Greektown in my ward, and will honor the many contributions Greeks have made to the city of Chicago," he says.

The West Loop area along South Halsted Street north of the Eisenhower Expressway has several Greek restaurants and businesses, serving Chicago's Greek population, which is the largest in the US.

The museum would include exhibition and gallery space, classrooms, office, auditorium, gift shop and research facilities, according to plans.
