King Sturge's analysis of the take-up figure highlights the pivotal role that the UK government has in the West End, which takes in the seat of government around Westminster. King Sturge calculates that government relocations accounted for 23% of all take-up in the West End last year, and more moves are on the cards.
Following the June 2001 election, when Labour won a second term in office, Prime Minister Tony Blair reshuffled departmental responsibilities, particularly in the Department of Transport, Local Government and the Regions; the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Department of international Development, and this has driven a number of office relocations in central London. For instance, the Department of International Development moved from land securities' Stag Place into 174,000 sf at One Palace Street.
