The in-line shop space is still on the drawing boards, Sal Macken, project manager for Summit Builders of Phoenix, tells GlobeSt.com. The center, which has yet to be named, is going up on the southwest corner of 83rd Avenue and Deer Valley Drive.

Kurt D. Reed Associates Inc. of Scottsdale has designed the newest project in the Fry's lineup. For Summit Builders, it marks the 16th that it's built for the chain, a supermarket division of Cincinnati-based Kroger Co. Macken is marking his 11th grocery project in four years in metro Phoenix, 10 of which have been Fry's. Meanwhile, Summit has turned over the keys to similar Fry's product in Chandler and Phoenix.

Little information is available about the retail project being plotted by the tract's developer who, Macken says, is Grand Bell Pavilions in Phoenix. Summit is handling just the Fry's and KDRA also says it doesn't hold the contract for the balance of the project. At this stage, it's anybody's guess as to what and when the plan will start to unfold.

What is known is that retail is fueling the city coffer, with sales tax revenue the top performer and accounting for 30% of the general revenue funds. This year, city projections call for sales tax collections to hit nearly $30 million. And, the city is poised for ongoing commercial retail growth as the population continues upward. In 1990, Peoria had 50,618 residents; today, it has a head count of 108,364 and is ranked as the state's ninth largest city.
