The 200,000-square-foot facility will include car storage and parking. The city donated approximately five acres of the Tacoma Dome parking lots on D Street for construction of the new museum. Estimated costs for the completed project range from $80 to $100 million.
The museum will house the automobile, artifacts and memorabilia collection of Mr. and Mrs. LeMay. The Guinness Book of World Records lists the LeMay collection as the largest private automobile collection in the world.
Initial work will include schematic designs, model, a project schedule, phasing and expansion possibilities, public presentation materials and cost estimates. In addition, the board expects to receive a site plan, a set of floor plans, building elevations and illustrations of two to four exhibitscenarios.
The city will pay the design team from a $1 million grant for this phase of the design work. The museum will raise the funds for subsequent work as needed.
