The San Francisco-based jeans manufacturer and retailer vacated the 251,000-sf property more than a year ago when it relocated to a larger distribution facility in Henderson. Perry Muscelli of the Las Vegas office of Cushman & Wakefield of Nevada Inc. tells GlobeSt.com that the 20-year-old facility has a 72,000-sf concrete steel mezzanine thatinterferes with distribution. He says most potential buyers, seeking distribution space, found the mezzanine cumbersome although the balance of the design boasts 30-foot clear heights.

"We had to find a manufacturer that needed the space without the clear heights," he said. The 24-acre holding was on the market for more than a year and under contract three times before Interstate Bakeries came along. Muscelli, the seller's broker, says one of the deals was foiled by post-9/11 jitters.

Interstate Bakeries plans to renovate the building into a large bakery, designed to serve as a regional manufacturing plant. Muscelli says the new bakery will produce everything from croutons to hot dog buns. He believes Interstate Bakeries may be closing a plant in California and consolidating to the Henderson facility.

Interstate Bakeries is the largest wholesale baker and distributor of bread and snack cakes in the US. Its product lines include Dolly Madison, Hostess, Home Pride and Wonder. Whitney Kerr Jr. of Collier, Curley, Martin & Tucker of Kansas City, MO represented Interstate Bakeries in the acquisition.
